Manatee Sea Cow

• Manatees, also known as sea cows, are gentle and herbivorous marine mammals. They are often described as the “gentle giants” of the sea. Despite their large size, they are friendly and docile creatures that captivate the hearts of children and adults alike.
• Manatees have a unique adaptation called a “blubber layer.” This thick layer of fat helps them stay buoyant in the water, providing insulation and buoyancy. Kids can imagine manatees as living, floating pillows!
• Manatees are excellent swimmers, despite their hefty appearance. They use their powerful tails to propel themselves through the water. Children might be surprised to learn that manatees can reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour (24 kilometers per hour) in short bursts, although they typically cruise at a more leisurely pace.

Bonus fact: Manatees are known for their love of warm water. They tend to inhabit tropical and subtropical waters, where they can bask in the sun and regulate their body temperature. In colder months, manatees migrate to warmer waters, such as natural springs or power plant outflows, to stay comfortable and avoid cold stress.
